Understand what Schufa is and learn how to request your free annual data copy.
What is Schufa?
Schufa (Schutzgemeinschaft für allgemeine Kreditsicherung) is Germany's primary credit scoring agency. Think of it as the German equivalent of credit bureaus in other countries.
Schufa collects and stores information about your financial behavior, including:
- Bank accounts and credit cards
- Loans and payment history
- Mobile phone and internet contracts
- Rental agreements
- Payment defaults or insolvencies
Why does it matter?
Landlords, banks, and sometimes employers request your Schufa score to assess your financial reliability. A good Schufa score can help you:
- Secure an apartment (landlords often require it)
- Get approved for loans or credit cards
- Sign contracts for utilities or mobile phones
Your Legal Right
Under GDPR (Article 15), you have the right to request a free copy of all data Schufa stores about you once per year. This is called a "Datenkopie nach Art. 15 DSGVO."
